► (1877-1956) Químico y físico británico. Fue premio Nobel de Química en 1921, por su investigación sobre los procesos de desintegración nuclear.

Químico británico. Trabajó con Ernest Rutherford en el desarrollo de una teoría de la desintegración de elementos radiactivos. En 1912 fue uno de los primeros en concluir que los elementos podrían existir en formas (isótopos) de diferentes pesos atómicos, pero indistinguibles químicamente. En su libro Science and Life [Ciencia y vida] (1920) destacó el valor de los isótopos para determinar la edad geológica (ver datación por carbono 14). En 1921 recibió el Premio Nobel por sus investigaciones acerca de radiactividad e isótopos.
